Here at My Wellness Mindset, we believe in the power of holistic, person-centered care and above all else making the therapy process as enjoyable as possible! In addition to counselling, hypnotherapy, and dietetics, we’re excited to introduce another valuable (and possibly the cutest) member of our team: Astro. Here is a photo of Astro and Kierra’s son Luca for a little extra heart melting.
About Astro
Astro is a male Bichoodle (Bichon Frise x Miniature Poodle) that will grow to a maximum of only 4kgs, so he will always be small enough to fit in your lap for a cuddle if you would like one. Being a poodle cross, he has a very soft curly coat that is low-shedding and hypoallergenic - this means you will never leave covered in fur and it is very unlikely he will set off any allergies! This breed is commonly chosen as a therapy dog due to their intelligence and affectionate temperament which helps them connect with people and offer endless love. These specially trained animals offer more than just companionship—they can be an integral part of the healing process and here is how:
Instant Stress Relief
Walking into a therapy session can be daunting, even for someone who is very familiar with the therapy room. A therapy dog immediately creates a calming atmosphere. Studies have shown that simply petting a dog can lower cortisol levels (the stress hormone) and increase the production of serotonin, the hormone that makes you feel good.
Breaking Down Barriers
For many clients, especially those who are new to therapy, opening up can be challenging and it can take a couple of minutes to a few sessions to feel totally comfortable. A therapy dog helps break the ice, offering unconditional love and non-judgmental companionship. This can make it easier to talk about difficult topics, knowing you’re in a safe and supportive environment.
Enhancing Emotional Well-being
Therapy dogs are known to provide emotional support that’s hard to replicate. They are sensitive to human emotions and can offer comfort simply by being present. This emotional bond can be particularly helpful in sessions focused on trauma, grief, or depression.
Encouraging Social Interaction
If social anxiety is something you’re working through, a therapy dog can act as a social catalyst. Their presence often encourages more natural conversation and interaction, helping clients practice social skills in a low-pressure setting. The dog’s warm, welcoming nature can help you feel more at ease and connected.
Supporting Physical Health
The benefits of therapy dogs extend beyond mental and emotional well-being. Their presence has been linked to physical health improvements such as lower blood pressure, reduced heart rate, and even enhanced pain management. The connection between mind and body is powerful, and therapy dogs can be a bridge to holistic healing.
Creating a Positive Association with Therapy
For some, the idea of therapy might carry negative connotations or past experiences. Incorporating a therapy dog into sessions can help shift that perspective, creating a more positive, nurturing association with the therapeutic process.
At our practice, we’re dedicated to offering the best possible support for your mental health journey. Our therapy dog Astro is more than just a pet; he is an integral part of the healing process, offering comfort, connection, and unconditional love. Whether you’re dealing with anxiety, depression, trauma, or just need a calming presence, Astro is here to help you every step of the way.
If you have any concerns about sessions with Astro, and would prefer that he does not attend your sessions please don’t hesitate to let us know. Your well-being is our priority, and we’re here to support you!
